How We Rate
The Chicago Route uses the four stars on the Chicago flag — one for each defining moment in the city's history. Less leeway than five stars. More honest rankings.
Every restaurant, bar, venue, and Pro on The Chicago Route carries a rating. Here's what each star means — and how we earn the right to give them out.
The Four-Star Ladder
★
Fort Dearborn
Solid foundation — worth a visit.
Where it all started. A legit spot doing its job well. You'll have a good time. Reliable, recommended, but not yet remarkable.
★ ★
The Great Fire
Memorable — leaves a mark.
This place sticks with you. You'll talk about it the next day. Something — the food, the room, the people, the moment — burned itself in.
★ ★ ★
The World's Fair
A showcase — go out of your way.
Chicago shows off here. Cross-town worthy. The kind of spot you take a visiting friend to when you want them to understand what the city actually is.

Century of Progress
South Side's best — can't miss.
The highest honor we give. Best-in-class. The places that define the South Side and that we'd put up against anywhere in the city — or the country. Earned, not awarded.
Why four stars instead of five?
Five-star systems hedge. Four-star systems pick a side. Fewer rungs means each rung has to be earned. And four matches the four stars on the Chicago flag — every rating you see is a small reminder of where this is. We're not the world's grid. We're Chicago's.

How We Score
Our ratings aren't an algorithm. They're an editorial call by people who eat in these rooms, drink at these bars, and walk these neighborhoods.
- We pay our way. Editorial reviewers don't accept free meals or comped tabs.
- We visit more than once. One great or terrible night isn't a rating. We go back.
- Sponsorship doesn't move ratings. Pro tier upgrades visibility, not score. Every sponsored placement carries a clear disclaimer.
- Reviews update. A place can rise. A place can fall. Ratings reflect the current state of the spot, not its history.
If you ever see a rating that feels off, tell us — we adjust, we don't dig in.
