Orbert Davis and the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic reimagine Miles Davis and Gil Evans' 1960 classic Sketches of Spain, with two new pieces that bring in African and Middle Eastern instruments.
Trumpeter Orbert Davis founded the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic to blur the line between jazz and the orchestra, and Sketches of Spain, the 1960 Miles Davis–Gil Evans album, is a natural fit. In Sketches of Spain: Revisited, the orchestra plays the album through its own lens, and Davis adds two new compositions that fold African and Middle Eastern instruments into the mix.
It's a rare chance to hear a full jazz orchestra on the far South Side, in the Beverly Arts Center's Baffes Theatre.
