Día de los Muertos Xicágo

The National Museum of Mexican Art's annual Día de los Muertos gathering in Harrison Park, a space to remember loved ones. Community-created ofrendas fill the park, with live music, performances and art activities, and an illuminated ofrenda projected on the museum's exterior. Takes place rain or shine.

Every October the National Museum of Mexican Art turns Harrison Park, right next door to the museum in Pilsen, into a shared space for remembering the people we've lost. Families, schools and community groups build ofrendas across the park, and visitors walk among them, read the photos and notes, and leave a thought of their own. Through the afternoon and evening there is live music, performances and hands-on art activities, and once it gets dark the museum's front becomes a giant illuminated ofrenda, with photos submitted by the public projected onto the building. It's free and open to the public, and it happens rain or shine, so dress for the weather. If you want a loved one included in the projection, the museum takes photo submissions until October 15 at noon, and groups can register to build an ofrenda in the park. The museum points visitors to transit: the Pink Line to Damen or 18th Street, the #50 Damen bus to 19th Street, or the #9 Ashland bus to 18th Street.
