La Villita is where summer tastes like a paleta. Cool down with churros and ice cream at El Churro Shop or grab a bag of Mexican candy and mangonadas at Dulcelandia. For the sit-down feast, Nuevo Leon has been the northern-Mexican anchor of 26th Street for decades — and it still delivers.
Chinatown — cold treats after dark
When the pavement’s radiating heat, Chinatown is a dessert destination. Vampire Penguin piles shaved snow into fruit-topped towers, and Sweet Catch keeps the bubble waffles coming late. Make a night of it — MingHin Cuisine for dim sum first, sweets after.
Oak Lawn — patios and frozen custard
The southwest suburbs do summer right. Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurant pairs a big patio with its own wine list, while Fry the Coop turns out the Nashville-hot chicken sandwich that has a genuine cult following on 95th Street.
